DAR ES SALAAM — The African Union (AU) on Saturday, November 1, congratulated Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election, even as violent protests erupted across the country following the disputed October 29 polls.
In a statement issued Saturday, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf acknowledged the official results and congratulated Hassan for securing another term. He expressed regret over the loss of life during post-election unrest and extended condolences to the affected families.
Youssouf urged Tanzanian authorities to respect fundamental freedoms — including peaceful assembly, speech, and expression — while calling on citizens to remain calm and adhere to the rule of law. He emphasized that democracy, human rights, and political pluralism, as outlined in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, remain key pillars of peace and stability across the continent.
The AU also reaffirmed its commitment to support Tanzania in promoting peace, national unity, and good governance.
However, the situation on the ground remains tense. Protests have continued for three consecutive days in cities such as Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Mwanza. Demonstrators are rejecting the election results and demanding political reforms.
Authorities have deployed security forces nationwide, imposed curfews, and restricted internet access amid growing reports of violence and arrests. Local media report that at least 10 people have been killed and dozens injured during clashes with police.
Opposition leaders claim the election was neither free nor fair, alleging voter intimidation and ballot tampering. International observers, including the European Parliament, have echoed similar concerns.
Political analysts warn the unrest highlights growing frustration over economic inequality, limited political space, and governance challenges under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.
Despite the AU’s message of congratulations, many Tanzanians continue to call for transparency, justice, and democratic accountability in the country’s political system.
