The death toll from the mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach has climbed to 16, New South Wales police said on Sunday. Around 40 people remain hospitalized following the attack.
Police said more details would be released as investigations continue.
Incident Declared Terrorism-Related
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon described the shooting as a terrorist incident. Authorities said the attack is being treated with the highest level of seriousness.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said the shooting was “designed to target the Jewish community,” raising national security concerns.
Suspects and Injuries
Police confirmed that a man believed to be one of the shooters is among those killed. A second suspected gunman is in critical condition.
Two police officers were also injured during the incident and are receiving medical treatment.
Investigation and Security Measures
NSW Police said specialist officers are examining several suspicious items found near the scene. An exclusion zone remains in place as forensic teams continue their work.
An extensive crime scene has been established, and authorities stressed there are no reports linking the shooting to other incidents elsewhere in Sydney.
