Pam Bondi is out as U.S. attorney general after President Donald Trump announced her removal in a Truth Social post on Thursday. He said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche would take over on an interim basis, making Bondi the second cabinet-level official to leave in less than a month.
Trump praised Bondi as a patriot and loyal ally, but he did not explain why he removed her. Reports published before the announcement said he had grown frustrated with her handling of records tied to Jeffrey Epstein and with the pace and direction of Justice Department actions under her leadership.
Pam Bondi leaves after mounting pressure
Bondi had faced criticism from several directions. Opponents said the Justice Department under her had become too closely aligned with Trump’s political interests, while others focused on her handling of the Epstein files. That issue had drawn bipartisan scrutiny and contributed to growing pressure on the department.
Her departure also follows the recent removal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Together, the two exits suggest that Trump is still willing to make abrupt changes at the top of his administration despite being deep into his second term.
Todd Blanche steps in as replacement
Blanche will now serve as acting attorney general until Trump names a permanent successor. He is a former personal lawyer to Trump and has been one of the president’s most trusted legal allies. His appointment immediately raised fresh questions about the Justice Department’s independence and how closely it may remain tied to Trump’s political agenda.
Several reports said Trump has considered Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, for the permanent role. However, the president has not publicly confirmed any nomination. Any formal choice would require Senate confirmation.
For now, the removal of Pam Bondi leaves the Justice Department facing another period of transition. It also keeps attention fixed on whether Trump wants a new attorney general who is not only loyal, but also more aggressive in carrying out his priorities.
