Puntland’s regional authorities say their military campaign against ISIS fighters in the Calmiskaad mountain range in northeastern Somalia is reaching its final phase. The operation, ongoing for more than a year, aims to completely remove ISIS from one of its last strongholds in the region.
According to Puntland’s State Minister for the Presidency, Cabdi Fataax Maxamed Cabdi Nuur, security forces have cleared about 95% of the territory previously held by the group. He said major command centers, bases, towns, and surrounding areas once controlled by ISIS are now under Puntland’s control.
Officials acknowledge, however, that small ISIS cells remain scattered across hard-to-reach parts of the mountains. These fighters are believed to be hiding in caves and remote areas, making the final phase of the operation more challenging.
Cutting Off Supplies
Puntland regional forces are also working to weaken ISIS by isolating the remaining pockets. Measures include restricting food, supplies, and other support from reaching militants still entrenched in the mountains. The minister noted that government forces are putting “heavy pressure” on these areas to prevent any resupply or escape.
Difficult Terrain Slows Operations
The rugged landscape of Calmiskaad has made the campaign slow and demanding. The steep terrain forces troops to move on foot, horseback, or with pack animals, limiting the speed of operations and complicating logistics.
U.S. Support in Targeted Strikes
Recent reports suggest the U.S. has carried out targeted airstrikes in the area against ISIS operatives. Puntland officials confirmed close cooperation with the United States, including intelligence sharing to support the ongoing mission.
Long-Term Effort to Secure the Region
Puntland launched its major offensive against ISIS in Calmiskaad late last year. While significant progress has been made, local officials say fully securing the region will require continued pressure until the remaining militants are neutralized.
