Thailand has reported a decline in tourist arrivals from Southeast Asia, with more than 6.4 million visitors recorded in the first eight months of the year — a 9.4% drop compared to the same period in 2023.
Malaysia remained the largest source market, contributing 3 million visitors, followed by Laos (630,000) and Singapore (612,000), according to figures cited by the Bangkok Post.
Tourism officials and analysts attribute the slowdown to safety concerns, political instability, and regional economic challenges, factors that have weighed on travel sentiment across the region.
Despite the decline, Thailand continues to rank among the top destinations for Southeast Asian travelers. Authorities say they are working to rebuild confidence through stronger security measures, promotional campaigns, and enhanced cross-border cooperation.
Tourism is a key pillar of Thailand’s economy, and the government has set a target of attracting 36 million international visitors in 2025.
