Türkiye has officially delivered the first batch of its indigenous Altay tanks to the armed forces, a significant milestone in the country’s defense modernization drive. The handover took place at the inauguration of the BMC Ankara Tank and New Generation Armored Vehicles Production Facility.
Altay Tank Marks a New Era in Türkiye’s Defense Industry
The Altay tank Türkiye program represents a new chapter in the nation’s goal of building a fully independent and technologically advanced defense sector. Developed by Turkish automaker BMC, the Altay has completed a rigorous testing phase covering 35,000 kilometers and 3,700 live-fire trials.
Built to perform under extreme battlefield conditions, the Altay is equipped with advanced armor, mobility systems, and a high-tech fire control system. It has been designed to meet modern combat standards while ensuring maximum protection and firepower for troops on the ground.
Mass Production at the BMC Ankara Facility
The new BMC Ankara facility, covering 63,000 square meters, is the core hub for Türkiye’s next-generation armored vehicle production. The plant is set to produce eight Altay tanks and ten Altug armored vehicles each month. This production rate highlights Türkiye’s growing capacity to meet both domestic and international defense demands.
A Step Toward Defense Independence
The introduction of the Altay underscores Türkiye’s determination to reduce foreign dependency in military procurement. The country has steadily increased investments in local defense technologies, achieving breakthroughs across air, land, and sea platforms.
With the delivery of the Altay tanks, Türkiye strengthens its position as a regional defense leader and demonstrates its ability to produce high-performance systems.
