Somalia has officially launched its Somalia offshore drilling campaign after a Turkish deep-sea vessel arrived to begin exploration along the country’s coast. The operation marks the first major offshore drilling effort led by the Somali government in partnership with Türkiye, signaling a new phase in energy development.
The vessel, known as Çağrı Bey, entered Somali waters earlier this week and is set to begin a 288-day exploration program at the offshore well Curad-1. Senior Somali leaders, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, attended a ceremony in Mogadishu to mark the launch of the project.
Somalia offshore drilling enters new phase
Officials say the campaign will drill to depths of up to 7,500 meters, placing it among the deepest offshore operations globally. The project follows a 2024 agreement between Somalia and Türkiye covering both offshore and onshore energy exploration.
Somali authorities describe the effort as a major step toward unlocking the country’s natural resources. They say the initiative could open the door to increased investment, job creation, and long-term economic growth.
Moreover, the government views the Curad-1 well as a test case for Somalia’s potential as a future energy producer. If successful, it could position the country among emerging hydrocarbon economies in the region.

Economic expectations and regional impact
Somalia’s leadership has emphasized that transparency and national benefit will guide the project. Officials say any future development will follow clear regulatory frameworks to ensure revenues support public services and economic stability.
At the same time, the project highlights Somalia’s growing role in regional energy dynamics. The partnership with Türkiye reflects increasing international interest in the Horn of Africa’s offshore resources.
However, challenges remain. Somalia continues to face security and governance pressures that could affect large-scale investments. Despite this, authorities remain optimistic that the drilling campaign will attract further international partners.
Looking ahead, the outcome of the current exploration phase will be critical. If viable resources are confirmed, Somalia offshore drilling could reshape the country’s economic outlook and strengthen its position in regional energy markets.
