Somalia has officially launched its Somalia offshore drilling campaign after a Turkish deep-sea vessel arrived to begin exploration along the country’s coast. The operation marks the first major offshore drilling effort led by the Somali government in partnership with Türkiye, signaling a new phase in energy development.
The vessel, known as Çağrı Bey, entered Somali waters earlier this week and is set to begin a 288-day exploration program at the offshore well Curad-1. Senior Somali leaders, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, attended a ceremony in Mogadishu to mark the launch of the project.

Officials say the campaign will drill to depths of up to 7,500 meters, placing it among the deepest offshore operations globally. The project follows a 2024 agreement between Somalia and Türkiye covering both offshore and onshore energy exploration.
Somali authorities describe the effort as a major step toward unlocking the country’s natural resources. They say the initiative could open the door to increased investment, job creation, and long-term economic growth.
