Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Monday expressed support for an international naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz following the recently announced agreement between the United States and Iran.
Meloni said Italy is prepared to contribute to efforts aimed at ensuring the safe and full reopening of the strategic waterway, subject to parliamentary approval.
Italy supports Strait of Hormuz security efforts
In a statement posted on X, Meloni said Italy is ready to join other international partners in supporting maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
She noted that any Italian participation would require authorization from parliament.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy transit routes. Therefore, international efforts to maintain safe navigation are viewed as critical for global trade and energy markets.
Support for diplomacy and regional stability
Meloni also welcomed the agreement reached between Washington and Tehran.
She recalled a joint statement issued by Italy, France, Germany and the United Kingdom supporting the diplomatic breakthrough.
In addition, she thanked mediators involved in the negotiations, particularly Pakistan and Qatar.
“This is an opportunity for peace that must be seized,” Meloni said, adding that Italy remains ready to support efforts toward a comprehensive agreement.
Focus on Lebanon
Meloni also emphasized the importance of ending hostilities in Lebanon.
She said Italy would continue supporting Lebanese sovereignty and regional stability through diplomatic engagement.
Earlier Monday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the United States and Iran had reached an agreement after intensive negotiations.
According to Sharif, both sides agreed to immediately and permanently halt military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon.
